- The –ndo form is used with the following structures in addition to estar + ndo.
- continuar / seguir + present participle= to continue to do something
e.g. Él continúa / sigue estudiando el español. (= persiste en estudiar)
He continues to study Spanish.
2. llevar + duration + present participle=to have been done something for + duration
e.g. Lleva mucho tiempo viviendo en Madrid. (=hace mucho tiempo que vive)
He has lived in Madrid for a long time.
Llevaba mucho tiempo viviendo en Madrid. (=hacía mucho tiempo que vivía)
He had lived in Madrid for a long time.
3. Adverb (how something is being done)= by doing something
Aprenderás nuevo vocabulario leyendo buenos libros.
Empezó saludando a todos los presentes.
Lo hizo dándose cuenta de todo.
- In English, the present participle can be used as an adjective. In most cases where the English present participle functions as an adjective, this idea is expressed in Spanish with an adjective clause introduced by que. Compare these sentences.
La mujer que canta es roquera. The woman singing is a rock star.
Recibieron una carta que describía el puesto. They got a letter describing the job.
