Grammar
Verbs meaning “to need”
Spanish has two ways of saying “to need something”. Necesitar is one of them which acts like a normal verb. Note that an infinitive can follow necesitar meaning “to need to do something”.

Hacer falta is the other way to express “to need something”. It follows the patterns of gustar. It can also be followed by an infinitive.

Unlike gustar, however, you don’t normally use the definite article (el, la, los, las) after necesitar or hacer falta, as you normally need only a certain amount of the thing(s) you need. Therefore you should use un, una, unos, unas or a number if the thing concerned is countable, and use the noun by itself if it is uncountable. See examples in the table above.
