Breakout Moderators/Facilitators

Divide large group into smaller groups of 2-3 people max plus the Breakout Moderator. Moderators can be:

  • Ehkinoomagejig’s
  • Female, Ogitchidaa Kwe
  • Male, Shkaabewis
  • Other Helpers

Location

Traditional learning environments such as; Round House, Teaching Lodge, Sacred Fire Arbor are encouraged.  Indoor locations must have area in close proximity for a  fire.

Set Up

Outdoors

  • Primary location would be in a Teaching Lodge
  • Chairs in Circle, leaving directional doorways open
  • Drum in centre with Eagle Staff
  • Leaving space around Drum and Staff for the Bundle exercise
  • Easel set to the side where everyone can see
  • Hang/Pullup display posters where everyone can see prior to participant arrival
  • Can have clip boards available to write on if needed

Indoors:

  • Chairs in Circle, leaving directional doorways open
  • Tables in circular format outside of circle of chairs, leaving directional doorways open
  • Drum in center with Eagle Staff
  • Leave space in center with Drum and Eagle Staff for Blanket Exercise
  • Easel set to the side where everyone can see
  • Hang/Pullup display posters where everyone can see prior to participant arrival

Virtual TEAMS Protocol

To ensure accountability and the practice of being present and to actively participant in the Anishinaabe Aadziwin Pathways training.

  1. Opening, inviting ancestors to be apart of the proceedings.
  2. Camera is to be on at all times.
  3. Participatory Exercises and Discussions, it is expected that all attendees will participate in activities and conversations.
  4. Cell phones on silent mode and left put away.
  5. Remind participants about the sensitivity of topics, and regular “check-ins” will occur.
  6. Process when feel triggered; conversation to decide as group how to support each other.
    • Example: write down positive affirmations to look at when feeling vulnerable; have a object or item close by to touch that gives comfort; pause and take deep breaths; have a box of tissue near by (saving used tissues to put back to earth/or burn); make sure to have water; do EFT Tapping to calm anxiety.

Check ins

Every morning when return, advised to check in as a whole group and give reminders:

  • Check in with how people are feeling from yesterday’s session.
  • Remind participants about the sensitivity of topics:
    • In person:  if they need to leave the room during the activity at any time, to signal staff member if they are okay OR if they need help.
      • If there is no signal, a staff member will follow to make sure the participant is okay.
    • Virtually, discuss a process as a group with what works when feel triggered; conversation to decide as group how to support each other.
      • Example: write down positive affirmations to look at when feeling vulnerable; have a object or item close by to touch that gives comfort; pause and take deep breaths; have a box of tissue near by (saving used tissues to put back to earth/or burn); make sure to have water; do EFT Tapping to calm anxiety.
