The intention of this training is to introduce Anishinaabe culture authentically using a cultural safety trauma-informed indigenous social work approaches and practices.  Themes explored will include stages of life, family systems, customs, traditional customary care practices and how these have been impacted by the interruption of colonization, assimilation and cultural genocide.  Moving forward, focus will be on healing for clients, families, communities and ourselves.

  • To acknowledge and honor the spirit of Nogdawindamin, teachings will be shared within a ceremonial context. This means, visual presentations like power point will be used minimally. It will be up to each participant to absorb the teachings how they resonate with them.  There will be ample reflection time as well as opportunities to ask questions.
  • The training material is designed to overlap so that concepts will be layered in various ways, for all learning styles.
  • Self Reflection, it is recommended that participants take this time to reflect on personal worldviews, culture and healing. Various activities and questions will be given to complete.
  • Some of the information being shared may be hard before, we are asking participants to open their hearts to receive something new. Indigenous knowledge is an oral knowledge, so it is very important understanding how to listen.
