Surveys for Data Gathering and High Enrollment Courses Data

Methodology

Survey instruments

• • Determine the type of software to use for conducting the survey
    • The two surveys were designed in Google forms.
    • Consider software you are comfortable with for manipulating and analyzing data.

• • Develop a survey instrument for faculty
    • Survey was deployed from February 8, 2021 through March 7, 2021

• • Develop a survey instrument for the Promise Scholars Program students
    • Survey was deployed from February 1, 2021 through March 7, 2021

The two surveys comprised of multiple-choice and free-text questions. Some questions were made mandatory for survey participants.

Developing a survey instrument:

• • • • Consult literature on surveys and environmental scanning
      • Research any available adaptable survey instruments.
      • If no survey instrument suit your needs consider building one from scratch.
      • Review your project goals and design your survey instrument to address your goals.
      • The goals of your project will help you determine the type of questions to include in the survey instrument.
      • Consult colleagues to review the survey instrument for feedback.
      • Test the survey with colleagues below the final deployment.
      • Determine the timeframe to run the survey.

High Enrollment Student Data

• Obtain high enrollment student data from the registrar’s office.
  • Request the most recent set of data. You can also consider obtaining data going a few years back. For instance, I requested data going 3 years back for comparison purposes and to determine patterns and trends.

Textbook Cost

• Obtain a list of textbook prices from the campus bookstore. You can ask for the most recent quarter or semester.
• Searching the campus bookstore is also a way to look for textbook costs.

Deploying the Survey

• Craft an introductory email inviting survey participants

Email call for survey participation

Monitor responses to ensure everything is working well. Also, keep an eye on any feedback from respondents that may need some adjustments to be made on the survey.

Close the survey and commence data analysis and putting together the survey findings.
