Focus on Self: Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Progressive muscle relaxation is an excellent way to get yourself out of the panic mindset where everything feels out of control, and back into a thinking mindset.  This exercise is about 20 minutes, and it is good to go over once so you can learn the technique.  However, it does not take 20 minutes to do generally.  You can put this technique into practice in a few minutes, or less than a minute, at your desk, whenever you feel your level of anxiety rising.  This is a particularly good thing to do in the middle of an exam, if you feel yourself slipping out of control because there are a few questions you aren’t able to understand.  Remember, a basic exercise could take less than a minute.

This exercise is available on Brightspace.

To bring yourself back into your thinking brain from a state of anxiety, it is beneficial to focus on how your body feels physically.
