Topic 2 – Identify Types of Drawings
Sections
Floor plans, framing plans and foundation plans are horizontal cuts. If an architect wants to provide a vertical view for a particular portion of the plan, they will use a cutting plane line to reference that view in a different area of the print. Typically, a full section is cut across the entire width or length of the building. Partial sections may be used to show vertically the materials used in the wall construction from footing to roof.
Elevations
Elevations are used to show the exterior of the building in a set of drawings. Usually only four elevation drawings are required to provide the necessary information. Elevations are a good reference for general information on exterior finishes, windows and exterior doors.
