Section 2 – Installs Roofing

Introduction

The second aspect of exterior finishing involves installing roofing materials and related components. The roof protects the building from all elements of the weather and especially rain and snow.

The key sub-tasks for this task are:

  • E-15.01 – Installs roofing components
  • E-15.02 – Installs roof coverings.

Required Knowledge (NOA)

The NOA for Carpenter (2013) states the required knowledge for the task of installing roofing materials.

  1. Types of roofing materials such as asphalt, wood and metal
  2. Roofing installation and repair procedures
  3. Types of components such as vents, flashings and underlayments, and their applications
  4. Types of fasteners
  5. Adhesion requirements for site conditions
  6. Jurisdictional requirements
  7. Sequence of installation
  8. Safety requirements such as fall protection (toe boards on scaffolding and 3-point contact on ladders)
  9. Handling and placement requirements for roofing materials (NOA, p. 58).
