Section 3E – Installs Exterior Finishes

Required Knowledge

The correct installation of exterior finishes provides necessary weather protection and proper functioning of the building. Different components work together effectively to create an effective weather shield while also creating an attractive look for the building. The NOA for Carpenter (2013) identifies the required knowledge for the task of installing the various exterior finishes. These are:

1. Types of cladding such as siding and shingles
2. Effects of weather on exterior walls and protection such as rain screens and flashings
3. Types of exterior trims such as frieze boards, starter strips and mouldings
4. Installation sequence and procedures for exterior cladding
5. Cornices and soffit/fascia, and their installation procedures
6. Types of fasteners such as sheathing tape, electro-galvanized nails and ring nails
7. Safety requirements such as fall protection (toe boards on scaffolding and 3-point contact on ladders)
8. Types of wall membranes, adhesives, and sealants such as air barrier, tar paper and silicone caulking
9. Specialty tools such as snap-lock punch, zip tool and slot punch (NOA, p. 60)
