Section 1E – Installs Exterior Doors and Windows

Introduction

The correct installation of exterior doors and windows is required for the proper functioning and comfort of the building.

This task has been further divided into smaller sub-tasks by the National Occupational Analysis (NOA) for Carpenter (2013). This shows what will be covered in this manual:

  • Installs exterior jambs/frames.
  • Installs exterior doors.
  • Installs specialty exterior doors.
  • Installs exterior windows.
  • Installs exterior door and window hardware.

The NOA for Carpenter (2013) also then states the required knowledge for the task of installing exterior doors and windows. The required knowledge includes:

  1. Types of window and door jambs/frames, and their applications
  2. Types of exterior doors and windows, and their applications
  3. Window and door installation procedures
  4. Exterior door components
  5. Weather protection techniques such as installing flashing and weather

stripping

  1. Air and vapour barriers
  2. Types and styles of exterior door and window hardware such as locks,

latches and electronic systems

  1. Exterior door and window schedules
  2. Jurisdictional requirements
  3. Barrier-free access requirements
  4. Manufacturers’ specifications (NOA p. 55)
