Topic 3 – Construct Exterior Door Frame

Key Competencies (NOA )

  1. Select and use tools and equipment such as levels, tape measures, hammers, and cordless drills
  2. Assess and adjust rough openings for existing conditions as out-of-square, out-of-level and wrong size or location
  3. Prepare hinges and bolt locations on metal door frames to protect from grout
  4. Brace metal door frame to ensure plumb and square with adequate support
  5. Ensure adjacent jambs or frames are aligned with each other
  6. Level head jamb and plumb side jambs
  7. Secure jambs/frames by shimming and fastening to steel, wood and masonry
  8. Insulate cavity around jambs/frames to create a thermal break
  9. Install membrane and flashing around outside exterior jamb’s trim (NOA p. 55).

Jointing is the process of fitting a door into a frame. Wooden door frames should be constructed so that they can be installed plumb, level and square as well as the right size for the door and rough opening. In some cases, the rough opening may not be straight. This will require some adjustment to either the rough opening or frame to ensure the door will fit and operate correctly.
