Math Checkup: Convert Decimal Feet to Feet and Inches

Converting decimal feet to feet and inches is essential for taking measurements once you have calculated a length.  (You can’t measure 4.563’ on your tape!)  In this process, you will need to remember how to:

  • Round to the nearest whole number (for example, 7.8 gets rounded to 8 and 9.3 gets rounded down to 9.)
  • Reduce fractions (for example, 8/16 is reduced to 1/2.)

Example Convert Decimal Feet to Feet and Inches

Convert 8.8734 feet to feet and inches.

What I am calculating… What my calculator reads… What I am writing… What I am thinking…
Write down the whole number of feet because it needs no further calculation.
.8734 x 12 = 10.4808 Multiply the decimal portion of a foot by 12 so it converts to inches.
Write down the whole number of inches.
– 10 = 0.4808   Subtract the whole number of inches off the calculator so I only have a decimal.
X 16 = 7.6928   Multiply the decimal number by 16 to get the number of 16ths.
My calculator reads a decimal number of 16ths, but this can’t be read on a ruler, so I round to the nearest whole number of 16ths.  7.6928 rounds to 8.
I need to reduce the fraction.
