Librarians’ Note

Reed College Library enthusiastically embraced this project, as one of our first forays into an Open Educational Resource. Professor Jinhui Wu gave us the ideal opportunity to explore OER in all its facets with this ambitious collection of essays from her course on Chinese ghost stories and supernatural tales.  The initial challenge was exploring the copyright considerations, which presented a learning opportunity for both staff and students.  I would like to thank Kate McNally Carter, Open Educational Resource Librarian at University of Houston, for answering our questions and allowing us to modify a copyright agreement used for a similar project.  I would also like to thank our Systems Librarian, Laura Buchholz, for navigating the nebulous platforms for OER publishing and choosing Pressbooks, as the best solution for our purposes.  Most of all, I would like to thank Professor Wu for envisioning a project that highlights the exceptional intellectual capacity of Reed undergraduate students and presenting it in a platform that is accessible to all.  OER truly embodies the mission of academic libraries in their efforts to curate and disseminate information to all patrons.  It is our hope going forward that this project will inspire similar efforts across the curriculum.
