Overview

In this course design task, you will (a) determine the general types of assessments you will use and (b) explore specific online assessments you might use to measure student achievement of one or more learning objectives. This course design task will help you achieve the following learning objectives:

E1. Explain the difference between summative and formative assessments.

E2. Determine which of the four general types of assessments that you will use in your course.

E7. Apply the Quality Matters Standards to the design of your assessments.

Please follow the steps below to generate a rough draft of an assessment plan for your course.

Directions

This approach to an assessment plan has three sections.

  • The type, category, and specific kind of assessment
  • The number of times the assessment is used in the course. This connects to the course design map.
  • The number of points per assessment, giving us a total for the course.

We’ll use the table below.

Step 06. Revise the student assessment plan so that it contains each general type of assessment you want to use. Your own list will most likely be different from the example provided. If you’d like, you may label each assessment as either a formative or a summative assessment. However, if you aren’t sure yet how you will use the assessments, it’s okay if you don’t label them at this point. The main goal is for you to list out all of the specific assessments you will use to measure student achievement of the learning objectives.

Step 07. Share your student assessment plan with your instructional design consultant. Discuss the general assessment options and the specific types of assessments you want to use to measure student achievement of the learning objectives. Feel free to revise your list during your discussion. Using this list, you will work together to revise any information about your assessments in your course design pattern and course design map.
