Module 04: Drafting the Course Design Map and Course Evaluation Plan
Module Overview
We will begin this module by completing as much of the Course Design Map as possible. We will then work on your course evaluation plan. The course evaluation plan describes the way you will evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal of your course content and the instructional strategies you are using.
Learning Objectives
In this module, you will complete design tasks that will help you achieve the following learning objectives.
H. Develop a framework (course design pattern) for each module.
M. Create a course evaluation plan to measure the effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal of the course.
M1. Distinguish between formative and summative course evaluation.
M2. Explain the purpose of having a comprehensive course evaluation plan.
M3. Identify the people with whom you will share course evaluation data (e.g., students, faculty, department chair, etc.) and the reasons for sharing it.
M4. Explain the University’s procedure for standardized online course evaluations and ways to customize them.
M5. Identify the questions, data, and collection procedures you will use to measure the effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal of your course.
M6. Identify the tools you will need to collect and analyze the data.
O. Write a high-quality response to an online discussion prompt and participate in a productive conversation with others.
Why This Module Is Important
By the end of this module, you will have a pretty good idea of the different types of learning activities that will be carried out each week of the course. You will also know how you will evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal of these learning activities. Evaluation data is important information for you to have if you wish to practice continual course improvement.
How this Module Relates to Other Modules
This module builds upon the work you have done in Modules 01-03 to continue developing your Course Design Map. You Course Design Map is a valuable tool that can be used to guide the work you will do over the rest of the seminar.
Strategies for Success
The instructional strategies we present in the next module may prompt some changes to your Course Design Map. Therefore, it may be helpful if you wait until the end of the next module before you finalize any of the design decisions recorded in your Course Design Map. For now, you will build more momentum in your course design process if you just think of your Course Design Map as a rough draft of what you will eventually do in your course, and if you allow yourself to fill out the entire Course Design Map even if you are uncertain yet if you will do everything you write down. At this point, you will find that the design process will pick up tremendous speed if you have at least a rough idea of the “big picture” of your course.
