Essential Knowledge

Community Engagement

Pennstate College of Agricultural Sciences defined community engagement as a strategic approach aimed at collaborating with specific groups, connected by geography, shared interests, or affiliations, to identify and tackle issues that impact their well-being. Upon knowing about the community and the various roles of those who belong to it, being able to communicate with its members is also important. It does not only make information dissemination faster, but also gives a way for everyone to develop rapport by keeping everyone connected and heard. But what makes a good engagement? The Virginia Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Virginia Tech and Virgina State University have identified four (4) phases of community engagement which are:

  1. Setting the stage- it is where the purpose and process of the engagement is outlined. The issues to be discussed and the importance of engagement are also identified in this phase.
  2. Gathering of facts, brainstorming, and selection- in this phase, the facts related to the issue or topic are gathered. It is also the phase where the “what ifs” are being asked to come up with possible plans or solutions.
  3. Plan and review- after gathering possible solutions or plans, this phase is where the community chooses which plan or solution is best for them in reaching their goal.
  4. Implementation and evaluation- this last phase is where the chosen course of action or solution is being implemented. After the implementation, the outcome will be evaluated for the community to see if their decision is effective or not. The results of this evaluation can be used as a basis for them to better prepare for their upcoming activities.

Activities

At this point, you will be tasked to work both independently and in groups to complete assigned tasks by applying what you’ve learned and combining it with your creativity. Keep in mind that collaboration is key so be sure to work together, share your thoughts, and discover new ideas.

Conversational

  • Aspired Role in the Community
  • Reason Why

Criteria for Scoring

Below is a table which shows the basis of how the learners will be scored accordingly.

Technical

News Writing

Jan Shaw from the San Jose State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication said that there are 5 Ws and H that should be answered in writing a news report. The following are:

Who   – refers to those who are involved in the event or issue.

What – the event or issue being reported.

Where – the setting or where the event or issue happened.

When – the time and date of the event or the issue’s occurrence.

Why   – the reason or motivation of the event or issue; and

How   – shows how the event or issue happened

The Ws and H let us come up with a detailed news article. It also gives us an idea of how to structure our articles, making them more understandable for our consumers.

Activity:  News Writing

Instruction: The students will be divided into groups of 6. 6 details will be provided below and as a group, they will identify which of the Ws and H are those. After that, they will be tasked to write a short and simple news article using the details that they have gathered, and one member of the group will present their article in front.

Criteria for Scoring:

Creative

Narrative Writing

In writing a story, Holly-Robyn Harrison of Oldham Coleseum Theatre said that the story should be shaped by dividing it into three segments which are the beginning, the middle, and the end. Each segment is composed of different parts of a story.

First is the beginning. This is where most of the parts are introduced like the characters, setting, and the context of the story. After that, in the middle segment, it is where the challenge or conflict in the story will begin. It will then continue up to the climax of the story. Lastly, when the climax is done, we will now be writing the ending segment of the story where the story is wrapped up. At this part, the conflict or challenge is ended, and the concluding statement is found. Below is a table showing the segments of a story.

Activity:  Short Story Writing
