This project makes a significant contribution by highlighting Ukraine’s central position in global migration studies, offering a comprehensive analysis of its historical and contemporary migration dynamics. The collection addresses critical concerns such as the lack of in-depth research on migration in Ukraine, the impact of displacement in European contexts, and the complexities of migration governance in the region. It explores how migration has shaped Ukraine’s political, social, and cultural fabric, from historical events like the deportation of Crimean Tatars to the ongoing displacement caused by the ongoing war.
The project findings underscore the need for a nuanced approach to understanding migration that integrates historical context with contemporary migration issues. The authors propose that migration governance and identity formation in Ukraine should be studied as part of a broader global migration framework, challenging conventional methodologies. Using a mixed-methods approach, including archival research, oral histories, and qualitative data, the collection draws on diverse sources such as historical documents, contemporary migration surveys, and fieldwork.
