Book Description
With urgent debates for global societies and focusing on Portuguese-speaking communities, including diasporic groups in the U.S., Plural presents itself as a possibility to support teachers in building a course with empowering and inclusive practices. In the five sections that make up each of its units, Authentic inputs are presented to students from the first unit of the book, which is aimed at the beginning audience and relies on the students’ inherent meaning-making skills. The “Acervo” section uses these inputs to present the central theme of the unit while allowing the exploration of the semantic field of the theme, providing elements that help students understand and reflect on the topics already proposed in the target-language. The “Metalíngua” section aims to solidify the understanding of the language structure, presenting grammatical issues from various textual genres selected under a progressive thematic logic. The “Sonoridade” section focuses on phonetic and phonological aspects of the language from a pluricentric perspective, not reflecting only one specific Portuguese language community. This exploration of the Portuguese sounds from a broader perspective is stimulated by presenting various materials with representations of different languages in Portuguese. The section “Vozes Lusófonas” proposes using literary content to students, expanding their cultural repertoire in Portuguese without the fear that the understanding of literary poetics is incompatible with basic levels of foreign language learning. Finally, the “Projeto” section proposes using language for social practices that impact the communities that may be affected by these actions, always bringing social justice to the heart of the classroom and its extension. Thus, there is a critical reflection on the insertion that individuals must have in a community when they can access it through mastery of the spoken language, helping to build more respectful and impactful relationships.
