Content Guidelines and Moderation Policy

last revised July 11, 2022

The community of creators using Pressbooks and involved in publishing is a global one. In working to build this community together, everyone should feel safe contributing to it. We respect user and academic freedom, and we are open to the discussion of difficult and sensitive material in books on our platform. What we do not allow is material that we consider harmful to our community or that seeks to undermine the technical operations of the platform. More specifically, the following material is not permitted on Pressbooks and will be subject to removal:

Advertising.
3rd party advertising is not permitted on Pressbooks.

Doxxing & Posting of private information.
You may not share another person’s personal/identifiable information without their consent (address, email, passwords, credit cards etc).

Illegal content and activities.
Any content or activities that are deemed to be illegal.

Impersonation.
Except in the case of satire or parody, users may not claim to be a person, institution or organization that they are not.

Hotlinking to Pressbooks.pub
Your Pressbooks.pub site shouldn’t host files that will only be used on other sites.

Intellectual property infringement.
Copyrighted content used without permission, or sufficient attribution. Note that some copyrighted materials may be used under fair use/fair dealing provisions of both Canadian and US copyright laws. But it is always a good idea to ask for permission from the rightsholder.

Pornography.
“I know it when I see it.” Pornography is generally defined as visual depictions of sexually explicit acts.

Spam, Splogs, machine-generated content.
No spam, machine-spewed content soup used to drive traffic to third party sites, boost SEO, phish, spoof, or promote affiliate marketing.

Technologically harmful content.
We will remove anything that might be technologically harmful, which might include: spyware, adware, malware, or any other malicious or destructive code. Links to same will be removed as well.

Threatening material.
Direct and realistic threats of violence are not permitted on Pressbooks. Writing genuine calls for violence, harm or death against an individual person, or groups of persons is not permitted.

An important note:
Interpretations of these guidelines are solely up to Pressbooks. These guidelines are not exhaustive and they are subject to change. We also reserve the right, in exceptional circumstances, to remove any outrageously offensive material not captured in the above guidelines.

If you believe that content on Pressbooks has violated our Terms of Service or any of these guidelines, please report it to us at report@pressbooks.com. We will regularly review and investigate all reports that we receive. Based on the information available to us and the type of violation, we may directly remove content or we may contact the author to inform them of the violation, asking them to alter or remove content. Violating these guidelines might lead to a warning or a ban from the platform.
