Pronom EN

The pronoun EN is used:

  • to replace a noun that follows du, de la, de l’, des or a quantity ( such as un, deux, un peu de, beaucoup de, etc.)

☞  Vous voulez du café ?Oui, j’en veux.  Would you like some coffee? -Yes, I would like some.

  • with verbs followed by the preposition de: venir de (to come from), sortir de (to take out from), se souvenir de (to remember), etc.

☞  Vous venez de Paris ?Oui, j’en viens.  Are you coming from Paris ? Yes, I am coming from there.

 

The pronoun en is situated just before the verb.
 Tu manges souvent des frites ? – Oui, j’en mange souvent.  Do you eat French fries often? –Yes, I eat them often.
Here are some common expressions that use en:
  • Je m’en vais. I’m leaving.
  • J’en ai marre. I’ve had enough.
  • Je n’en peux plus. I can’t take it anymore.
  • Ne t’en fais pas. Don’t worry.
