Perioperative Care
Duties specific to the Registered Nurse during the Perioperative Period include:
Preoperative Care
• Ensure that Pre Op Anesthesia instructions have been given
• Ensure that Post Op Sedation instructions have been given
• Review health history: medications, allergies, pre-medication
• Ensure NPO status
• Ensure that patient is accompanied by a responsible adult
Intraoperative Care
• Venipuncture and placement of IV catheter
• Administer IV sedation medications (as directed by surgeon)
• Monitor and record vital signs
Postoperative Care
• Remain with patient
• Monitor ABC
• Monitor and record consciousness
• Ensure that verbal and written Post Op Surgery instructions have been given
• Facilitate discharge with responsible adult
