Brian Smith is a 64 y/o male who was found at home, unconscious, with an empty alcohol bottle in hand. Basic interventions are done in the ambulance, while the hospital is waiting for Brian’s arrival. The Medical team takes over, and assessment and interventions are performed.

Question 1: What clinical presentation do you expect Brian to display if Sepsis is suspected?

Laboratory results come back and clinical indicators lead to Brian’s diagnosis of Sepsis and alcohol intoxication.

Question 2: Would you suspect Brian’s breathing to be brady or tachy? Keep in mind alcohol consumption.

Additional MD orders are implemented for Brian’s plan of care as well as collaborative interventions. Brian’s second day of care is supportive treatment and the third day of care is to evaluate medical treatment. This is done by additional laboratory results and CIWA assessment. Case management is on the case to help Brian with recommendations for alcohol rehabilitation programs and better management of comorbidities. This is where Brian’s Neumann Stressors are discussed but were identified throughout the hospital stay.

Question 3: Brian’s Dx of Sepsis was secondary to aspiration pneumonia. What is important to teach Brian about his discharge antibiotics?
