This Is How a Hanging Indent Should Look

The first line is not indented, but all lines after are indented five spaces or 1/2 inch. Hanging indents help to highlight authors in a reference list.

Please do not use tabs, or the space bar to achieve a hanging indent. Your reference list should be double spaced.

Google Docs

To create a hanging indent in Google Docs:

  1. write your reference list separating each item with only a hard return.
  2. visit How to Create a Hanging Indent in Google Docs (shared Google Doc) to format your list.

MS Word

To create a hanging indent in MS Word:

  1. write your reference list separating each item with only a hard return.
  2. use Crtl + T on a PC, or Command + T on a MAC to format your list.
