Land was purchased land about 5 miles southeast of Alva, with the understanding that the former owner would plant wheat in the fall. Since it was a very dry fall and winter, their first crop in Alva failed. Kaffir corn was planted in the spring and it turned out to be a good crop.

In the distance on the horizon, about 5 miles to the northwest is the Alva, Oklahoma airport that was a German prisoner of war camp during World War II. Alva is located just to the north of this below the bluff.
