William and Martha both were active members of the Lutheran Church. William held various offices in the church and was on the building committee for the Lutheran school, dedicated in 1948.  Martha was a member of the Ladies Aid of the church.

The Zion Church Council in 1949 included several members of the extended Martha and William Kirmse family:

  • William Kirmse
  • Gilbert Krueger, son-in-law – husband of daughter Ella Kirmse
  • Roland Schmidt, son-in-law – husband of daughter Laura Kirmse
  • Walter William Lohmann, nephew – son of Johann Henry Lohmann and Marie Cordes, sister of Martha (Cordes) Kirmse

Also in 1949, son Julius Kirmse was president of the Lutheran Men’s Club and his wife, Hildegard, was the president of the LWML.
