Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students will be able to:

  • Identify the elements of a range of visual media, including paintings, advertisements, sculpture, and film
  • Apply their understanding of visual elements to analyze and evaluate visual texts
  • Write descriptive summaries of visual texts
  • Write rhetorical analyses of visual texts
  • Support interpretive arguments about visual texts using formalist elements and critical and rhetorical theories
