Know Your Rights
One of the most impactful equitable practices on a college campus is the open discussion of student rights. To that end, we are including information relevant to student educational rights in this section of this chapter. We begin with information about FERPA as it relates to on-campus and CCP students before providing a list of links to more information on the college’s website.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
FERPA grants students certain rights with respect to their education records, including the right to inspect their education records, request an amendment of the records that the student believes are inaccurate, and the right to control disclosures of their records except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.
It is important to note that all rights to access move to the student when that student is in a post-secondary education institution; parents, spouses, and significant others have no inherent right to access to student educational records.
Note for CCP/Early College Students: If the student is under 18, and financially dependent (as evidenced by federal tax returns), the parents still retain the rights under FERPA at the high school and may inspect and review any records sent by the postsecondary institution to the high school.
