42 ii7 – V7 – I7 in Jazz: 9th Chord Voicings

Using the standard II7 – V7 – I7 progression as a framework, alterations and extensions are added by the arranger or performer.

For example, the Dm7 –  G7 –  Cmaj7 progression in C major can become:

C: Dm9  –  G9 –  Cmaj9
or
C: Dm9 –   G7(\musFlat{}9) –  C6/9

 

The examples below show the major progression descending by whole and half steps with added 9th chords.

 

The examples below show the minor progression descending by whole and half steps with added 9th and 6/9 chords.

 

 

Practice

Continue the above sequential progressions in whole and half steps, cycling through all keys. Play at the keyboard. Memorize.
