Harmonizing Short Melodic Fragments

 

Most of these melodic fragments also work in harmonic minor with the occasional borrowing of III and VI from natural and melodic minor. The chart below shows several possible substitutions.

Complete the fragments in four voices. Provide full analysis. Then play and sing the outer voices.

Composers use common chord progressions to create musical phrases.

 

One example is the Tonic – Supertonic – Dominant – Tonic progression shaped as a I – ii2 – V6/5 – I. This formula is often employed by composers in opening themes. Below are four examples from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.
