Review: The Pre-dominant Family

The many substitutions and modifications of the subdominant chord (IV(7)) and supertonic chord (ii(7)) form a dominant preparation or pre-dominant family.

The chord set below shows the diatonic and chromatic possibilities leading to the [I ^6_4] – V(7) cadential formula.

Chromatic Deceptive Resolutions

The deceptive chords include do and thus act as substitutes for the I chord.
