Modal scales

 

  1. Sing each of the modal scales with syllables and with absolute names on a fixed note. Transpose onto other pitches.

  2. Major and/or natural minor should be used as points of reference.

  3. Note the alternate solfège possibilities.

 

The modal scales are listed below in order of their brightness, starting with Lydian. Each subsequent scale has one lowered (flatted) note.

Modal Chord Progressions

 

Below are examples of typical chord progressions used in modal music.

  1. Identify the modal cadential patterns. Note the characteristic modal degrees that stand in for leading tones at cadences.

  2. Sing the bass.

  3. Perform the examples in four parts.

  4. Transpose the examples at the keyboard into several keys.
