Examples with Extensions

 

Jazz chord progressions normally are indicated with basic seventh chords, but are voiced and dressed up in 5 voices with added 9ths, 13ths, and other extensions.

Here are two possible realizations of Diatonic example #2 above:

i      iv7     iiø7     V7   |    i

*In the second realization, the \musSharp{}5 in the G7(\musSharp{}5)(\musSharp{}9) is respelled as a \musFlat{}13 for ease of reading.

 

 

Practice

Play all the above chord progressions at the keyboard. Use voicings with the 9th or the 5th on top. Experiment with chromatic extensions. Name the chord symbols in several keys.
