10.1 Warming-up Exercise

Think about this problem

Sheena Loughlin, Dyana Warnock, and Jaclyn Napoleon are planning next year’s Welcome Week. They need to book a room for the Friday Advisathon event that is large enough to hold all staff, faculty, and MPA students. They can either do the event in the Husted Auditorium or else they can rent space at Unitarian Hall on Washington Avenue. Booking the Husted Auditorium is free, but the university fire marshal has limited the number of room occupants to 50 students, and is strictly enforcing the fire code. There is a rental fee to use the Unitarian Hall across Washington Avenue, but it can accommodate more people. If booked in advance, Unitarian Hall costs $4,000. One of the biggest challenges of planning Welcome Week is that Sheena, Dyana, and Jaclyn do not know how many MPA students will be in the cohort until the first day of Welcome Week. If they decide not to rent Unitarian Hall and the cohort is unexpectedly large, they can still rent the space at Unitarian Hall but it will be at a higher cost ($ 8,000). Based on previouos history, there is a 55% chance of having more than 50 students.
