Chapter 13 – Simulation
Learning Objectives
- Understanding Simulation as a tool for Policy Analysis
- Serious Games and Policy Making
In this chapter of the book, we discuss the value of simulation approaches to public policy and management. Puvlic policy and management problems are generally recognized as complex and tangled. Understanding all the variables that shape the problem and their relationships is not always a simple task. Simulation approaches are valuable to help the analyst to assess what-if scenarios and explore the impacts of policies on the overall system. The chapter introduces main types of simulation approaches and provides a case to explore its value in finding solutions to the problem. The chapter also discusses the utility of this approach for the analysis of complex public policy problems, including a methodological description and a set of examples of the successful use of the approach in public policy and public administration.
