As everything is moving online, there is no surprise that books are being digitized. There is no need to own hundreds of physical books when a kindle or tablet device can hold all your books in one place. There are a number of benefits to having eBooks.

What qualifies as an ebook? According to Jordan Wahl, a writer for the Learning Hub, in her blog called “What is an eBook? Understanding Why They Work and How To Make Your Own“,there are some characteristics that an eBook has to have in order to qualify as it being an eBook.

  • eBooks should not be editable; no one should be allowed to change any of the contents on an eBook.
  • eBooks are reflowable; There are fixed layouts and reflowable layouts meaning no matter on what device you are viewing the ebook, whether it is a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, the content always fits on the screen perfectly.
  • eBook formats; this includes EPUB, AZW, and PDF, are the most popular formats.

More people are picking up a Kindle or tablet over a physical book, making the eBook format a popular way for people to read. Even though it is more of a personal preference whether to read an eBook or paperback, there are some benefits of the eBook format.

  • eBooks save space; Physical books take up a fair amount of space to store, with eBooks you can own dozens of books in a single device and not have to rearrange any shelves to make room.
  • eBooks save money; eBooks are less expensive than paperback books because although an e-reader device may be more costly upfront, they are less expensive ways to buy books because they don’t include the materials cost for printing.
  • eBooks help save the environment- eBooks leave a smaller carbon footprint than print books.
  • eBooks are portable; Whether traveling or passing the time you can read whatever whenever just by taking out your device and opening up an eBook.
  • They are convenient; you can download eBooks from anywhere and start reading as soon as it’s loaded.
  • Change the font size; for those who have difficulty reading small print, making the font size bigger or smaller can make reading less of a strain.
  • They are searchable; You can search for keywords within the eBook and select the word to be taken directly to the page they appear on.

The choice is up to you, eBooks make it possible to own hundreds of books at once, enjoy reading anywhere in the world, and never worry about what to read next when you have a whole library on one device.
