Creating a website unfolds lots of information that you need to learn about. From usability, to HTML, to shared hosting, all of it is needed to manage a website. In this case, we are talking about hosting and how artists can take advantage from it. As a beginner to websites and hosting, I was very confused at just exactly what was hosting and how it could be useful for an artist’s portfolio.
HOSTING. What is it?
When learning about hosting, I had to look for more resources that could explain to me what it was and how it is beneficial to a website. I watched Jeff Starr’s web course over Installing and Running WordPress: Shared Hosting on LinkedIn Learning and it was pretty informative about hosting. Another website I looked on was Host Gator where I found a blog by Kevin Wood on Why Web Hosting is Important. I understood that when creating a website, you have files that need to be stores to be accessed online. Hosting is essential to a website, because it is the building blocks that keep the website sturdy and reliable with your files.
Web Hosting comes in 3 forms as told by Starr shared hosting, virtual private server (VPS), and a dedicated server. In this case, I found an article by Concept Art Empire Web Hosting For Artists: Reviewing The Best Options To Get Your Portfolio Online that goes over those types of hosting as well as portfolio building services.
Why artists should look into hosting their website
As I read more about web hosting and how it can be beneficial to many website creators, I think all artists with websites should look into investing in a good hosting site. On Concept Art Empires’ article, they suggest that using a free web hosting site is not recommended. Free web hosting sites for artists could lead to many disadvantages with slow width bands and unreliability. They do suggest paid web hosting and paid/free portfolio builders.
The two recommendations they had for artists were BlueHost and Cloudways. They go into details on what each web hosting site has to offer and also incorporate more hosting sites that may interest you like Wix and Squarespace.
Investing in your website
I am an artist and I was wondering how I can create a portfolio online and this blog was insightful with its details on the different web hosting sites.
Overall, if you are creating a website that needs to have a powerful server and be reliable, then invest in your website! Have your own VPS or invest in a reliable web hosting site. However it is, your art or creations on your website are valuable and so should your investment in your website.
