This proves why you can never be too cynical about the Trump Era GOP.

The 116th Congress could see the start of a two-year slugfest between two partisan heavyweights — Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

More gridlock, government shutdowns, and the potential impeachment of President Donald Trump could result from the faceoff, according to senators and members in both parties.”

I don’t see a government shutdown with McConnell’s Senate that was a House GOP thing.

Like Keynes said you have to change your mind if the facts change. As it turned out we started the year with a government shutdown-to be sure Trump not McConnell was the catalyst.

Yet a Pelosi-McConnell-run Congress might also yield deals benefiting both parties — and Trump, who could claim credit for any bipartisan packages as he mounts an expected reelection bid in 2020. Both Pelosi and McConnell may push for a deal on infrastructure spending, for example, an agreement that would affect every state and congressional district. Trump would also gain politically from any such package.

My prediction that the two parties could do immigration reform-or much of anything-also didn’t age well.

But there’s an important takeaway: as cynical as I may seem about the Trump era GOP-in this book I’ve argued there essentially willing to commit any crime to hold onto power up to colluding with a hostile foreign power-Trump’s collusion with Russia in 2016 was actually the third time the GOP has colluded with a foreign power to win an election in under 50 years-I made this prediction that McConnell and Pelosi could do immigration under the premise that McConnell has any core principles beyond partisan power.

I assumed he might be willing to do immigration reform as he believes it’s the right thing-after all he did it in 2013. But no-as Trump doesn’t want to do it, McConnell no longer wants to.

So as cynical as I am about the GOP I still wasn’t cynical enough-you can never be too cynical in ascribing this sociopathic party’s motivations.

Any time you ascribe even the most minimal good faith to them you will be bitterly disappointed.
