I agree with him but does Pelosi-Steny Hoyer-Jim Clyburn-Hakeem Jeffries agree with him? There’s reason for doubt. If you really believed that the current GOP needs to be confronted and destroyed you wouldn’t be dismissing an impeachment inquiry out of hand and spinning yarns about ‘self impeach’ and ‘I don’t want to impeach him I want him to go to prison.’
Pelosi always prefers that Trump faces consequences from a process she doesn’t control than what she herself controls. But who controls Trump going to prison? The SDNY which has now dropped its case-where was Bill Barr on that day?
In Chapter A I argued the GOP deserves to go in the penalty box for years for it’s treachery in rigging an American election-not for the first time.[1]
But if the Dems punt on impeachment-which seems to be what Pelosi dearly wants-there really will be no basis for putting the not so Grand Old Party in the penalty box-even if you defeat Trump without impeaching him you’ve effectively normalized him-you certainly legitimized the stolen election.

Hayes is certainly right-the modern GOP-of course I define modern GOP as post New Deal GOP starting certainly with Nixon-after all this is a party who with Trump has fully espoused fascism.
Ok so watching Washington Journal this morning and what the North Dakota GOPer Kelly Armstrong just said is notable: 'If I disagree with the President on policies I will speak up' But the real issue with Trump isn't policy but process. to say only policy matters is fascism

That is the textbook definition of fascism-sure I don’t like the tweets and which he’d be more measured but great policies so I will look the other way. I mean it’s like someone saying I wish Hitler did fewer concentration camps but at least he repaired the German economy so I prefer to focus on that.
But the only way to ‘confront and destroy’ the GOP is to tie Trump around their necks like a noose. It would start with public televised impeachment hearings. But the conventional wisdom is the Dems should punt on that as Mitch McConnell will never convict. Talk about perverse incentivization-we would impeach Trump but because you GOPers are so partisan and disloyal to the values and legitimacy of this country we won’t impeach him.
And those who worry that somehow McConnell ‘acquitting Trump’ validates him are totally looking at this upside down. If you want to confront the GOP the way to do it would be to force McConnell’s hand and acquit Trump on live tv. What could be a better argument for Senate Dem control than McConnell, Lindsay, and Friends protecting Trump from consequences?
Can you think of anything those Senate Republicans running in purple districts would rather talk about in the last days of the 2020 campaign than this?
I mean far from being scared of McConnell acquitting Trump we should relish this moment. Sending an indictment to the Senate is a win win-either the entire GOP has to defend abdicating their roles in the 2020 election or they are forced via public opinion to convict. Either way the Dems will win-a win-win.
It’s certainly a more coherent argument than we believe Trump has committed impeachable offenses but we are deadset against impeaching him because 2020.
Your daily reminder that if you don't use the only method the Constitution allows to deal with a president who committed multiple crimes to win the presidency and then coverup his crimes, you're basically begging him to do worse next time.
