This book contains materials taken from Openstax College Physics, Openstax University Physics, and other resources.  It also contains original writing.  The following is a description of changes made to the borrowed materials.

All figures and examples in the text are renumbered.

Unit 1

  • Put together from sections 1.2 and 1.3 of College Physics (Openstax)
  • Some paragraphs and pictures are deleted.
  • New content has been added to Uncertainties in Calculations in section 1.3.
  • “check your understanding” section at the end of Precision of Measuring Tools and Significant Figures in 1.3 is turned into an example.
  • changed example 2.8 from average velocity to constant velocity and eliminated the sketch.
  • Changed the wording in a few sentences.

Unit 2

  • Put together from sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.8 of College Physics (Openstax)
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • “check your understanding” section at the end of Distance in 2.1 is turned into an example.
  • The section about “time” is revised.
  • The section called “Representations of motion with constant velocity” has been added.

 

Unit 3

  • Put together from sections 2.4, 2.5, 2.7, and 2.8 of College Physics (Openstax)
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Combined examples 2.4 and 2.7
  • Added an exercise to the end of example 2.5
  • Section 2.5 is revised.
  • Added a new section to explain kinematics graphs for motion with constant acceleration and revised example 2.18.

unit 4

  • Put together from sections 3.2, and 3.3 of College Physics (Openstax) and section 4.1 of University Physics-Volume 1 (Openstax)
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Equations with vector notations have been added to the text and to the examples.
  • The section “Kinematics quantities and vectors” has been added.

Unit 5

  • Put together from section 3.4 of College Physics (Openstax)
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Notations in the kinematics equations have changed in the text and in the examples.
  • Some explanations have changed or been added.
  • The approach to the solution in example 3.4 has changed.

unit 6

  • Put together from section 6.2 of College Physics (Openstax)
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Vector notation has been added to the equation for centripetal acceleration.
  • The solution to example 6.3 is modified.

Unit 7

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch.  The examples are taken from Openstax University Physics Volume 1.  The solutions are reworded.  The pictures are taken from sections 5.1, 5.5, and 5.7 of University Physics (Openstax) volume 1.

unit 8

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch.  A few sentences describing normal and friction forces have been taken from MIT Open Courseware.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbook are reworded and presented differently.

Unit 9

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch.  The ideas and some sections describing kinetic and static friction forces have been taken from MIT Open Courseware, and College Physics Openstax.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 10

  • The section on “work” is put together from section 7.1 of College Physics (Openstax)
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.
  • Example 10.2 is a problem that was converted into an example and the solution is original
  • Example 10.3 is original.
  • The section on “work-energy theorem” is mostly written from scratch.
  • Example 10.5 is based on examples 7.3, 7.4, and 7.5 of College Physics (Openstax).  The wording and approach to the solution are significantly changed.

unit 11, Unit 12, Unit 13

  • These units are written from scratch.  The examples are from Openstax College Physics, and Openstax University Physics Volume 1, except example 13.3 that is original.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 14, Unit 15

  • Except for a few sentences taken from the Openstax College Physics, and Openstax University Physics Volume 1, these units are written from scratch.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 16

  • Put together from sections 13.1, 13.2, 13.3, 13.4 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • This unit also contains some original materials.  Examples 16.3 and 16.4 are original.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 17

  • Put together from sections 14.4, 14.5, 14.6, 14.7 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • The section on calorimetry is mostly written from scratch.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

Unit 18

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch with examples from Openstax College Physics.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

Unit 19

  • Put together from sections 15.3 15.4, 15.5, 15.6 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • The section on heat engines and thermal pumps is mostly written from scratch.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.  Example 19.3 is original.

unit 20

  • Put together from sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 of Openstax University Physics Volume 2.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Example 20.1 is original.

unit 21

  • The first two sections are mostly written from scratch with examples from Openstax College Physics.  The section on Electric Field of Multiple Charges is from section 18.5 of College Physics, Openstax.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.  Example 21.1 is original.
  • Most of the section on Applications of Electric Field is borrowed directly from section 18.8 of College Physics, Openstax.

unit 22

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch with the examples from Openstax University Physics Volume 2.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 23

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch with examples from Openstax texts.
  •   Example 23.2 is a problem in University Physics volume 2 that has been turned into an example.  Example 23.3 is modified.  Example 23.4 is original.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 24

  • A few paragraphs are taken from sections 20.1, 20.3 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Example 24.4 is a problem in Openstax College Physics that has been turned into an example.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 25

  • This unit is mostly written from scratch.  A few paragraphs are adapted from sections 21.2, 21.3 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Examples are from Openstax College Physics.
  • The solution to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently, except for Example 25.4.

unit 26

  • Put together from sections 22.1, 22.2, 22.3, 22.5, 22.8 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Some of the examples are from Openstax University Physics Volume 2.
  • Some of the solutions to the examples from the Openstax textbooks are reworded and presented differently.

unit 27

  • Put together from sections 22.9, 22.10 of Openstax College Physics.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.

  • Includes some parts from section  25.7 of Openstax College Physics, and sections 2.1, and 2.2 of Openstax University Physics Volume 3.

  • Put together from section 2.4 of Openstax University Physics Volume 3.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Examples are original.

unit 31

  • Includes some parts from section 26.4 of Openstax College Physics, and sections 2.5, 2.8 of Openstax University Physics Volume 3.
  • Some parts are deleted and some wordings have changed.
  • Example 31.1, and 31.2 are original.  The solution to example 31.3 from the Openstax  College Physics textbooks is slightly reworded and presented differently.
