I created this book for the algebra-based introductory physics 1 and 2 that I teach at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  This is not meant to be a comprehensive textbook covering all areas of introductory physics.  Instead, it only includes topics that I normally address in those classes.

My motivation for creating this book was twofold.  One was that, in my opinion, almost all commercially available textbooks contain too much extraneous information.  One could argue that this approach creates a context for the topic and places its relevance and importance in perspective.  This is true but for a typical college student who is juggling three or four other classes and perhaps a job and family obligations along with this class, and whose primary interest is not even physics, but biology (most of my students are biology majors) a typical textbook has just too much information to sift through to get to the core of what they really need to know for the class.  So, I set out to create a book that cuts to the chase and includes only the essence of what students really need to know.  I did include relevant applications in biology, but those sections are in green boxes and clearly separated from the rest of the text.  My second motivation for creating the book was the high cost of a typical textbook. That’s why my book is available for free to not only my students but to anyone else who cares to use it as is or to modify it and make it more suitable for their purpose.

The content of this book is a combination of borrowed materials (primarily from Openstax textbooks) and original writing.  This book is a work in progress and I intend to update and improve the content as time goes on.  I gratefully welcome any comment or suggestion, especially from my students.

Thank you for reading.
